I woke up this morning fully expecting to write about the evil of Planned Parenthood and their alleged selling of unborn body parts.  That was, until I saw one of the mornings trending topics on social media.

A Satanic Temple congregation in Detroit unveiled an erection of a satanic idol named Bephomet.  The bronze statue peaking at eight and a half-foot tall features a man’s body with a goat’s head and wings on its back.  On each side, two children look up in adoration of this demonic representation.

But then it hit me.

In light of recent church shootings, the legalization of same-sex marriage and the selling of body parts of aborted children by a federally funded organization, it should be no surprise that in America, we’ve displayed a statue of Satan in one of our largest cities.  Amidst of all the rapid moral decay in our country, let’s focus for a second on Planned Parenthood.

It’s not easy for a Christian, let alone a politically and theologically conservative Christian, to separate spiritual life and everyday life.  In fact, according to Scripture, it should be impossible.  Our lives are not like waffles, neatly compartmentalized so that we can easily deal with one area of life without venturing into another.  Paul reminds the church in 1 Corinthians 10:31, Christ’s lordship affects every area of life.

Yet there are some issues that are more easily separable than others.  For instance, I can argue for a standardized flat tax without opening my Bible.  I can argue for immigration reform without using my Bible.  I don’t have to quote blocks of Scripture to argue for or against certain economic policies.  I think I could even argue against same-sex marriage without quoting passages of Scripture condemning homosexual activity.

But abortion, I cannot.  Abortion is not merely a political issue, it is a gospel issue.

Here are the startling facts about abortion.  Nearly one out of four pregnancies ends in abortion.  The abortion rate in the United States is among the highest of developed countries.  Over half of the abortions performed in the United States happen to women under the age of 25.  Over one million abortions happen in our country each year. And the saddest statistic of all is that most abortions happen not for the sake of choice, but for the sake of convenience.  Mothers who do not have time or resources to raise a child simply choose to end their pregnancy rather than to seek help or other alternatives.

The truth about abortion that the left doesn’t want us to understand is that abortion ends life.  While this is masked by the rhetoric of rights, the fact remains that once conception happens (sperm meets egg), the exchange of DNA happens instantaneously and process of life has begun.  Once an egg is fertilized, a genetically distinct person has been created.

Yet, until the recent video that leaked of Planned Parenthood officials discussing the sale of aborted body parts, this issue has been like a ping pong ball, being bounced back and forth between Democrats and Republicans, with no one really wanting to stand up and do anything about it.

I’m reminded of the story of Amos in the Bible.  Amos was a sheep-breeder and a tender of sycamore trees (Amos 1:1, 7:14).  Amos was not a prophet nor had any aspirations of being God’s mouthpiece.  However, God raised him up in a generation of uncertainty in the two kingdoms of Israel and Judah and spoke against numerous evils happening in the land.  God’s message to the surrounding pagan nations was one of judgment because of their continuing sin.

What was their sin?  Disregard for Imago Dei.

Latin for “Image of God”, for generations the universal church has upheld Imago Dei as the ultimate respect for all persons and people groups.  We all have intrinsic worth and value because God created us as His image bearers.   In Amos chapter one, God turned his attention to the nations surrounding Israel because of their crimes against humanity.  Not only did they “rip open pregnant women” (1:13) but they also participated in human trafficking (1:6, 9).

Sound familiar?

But it gets deeper than that.  The prophecy continues in chapter two of Amos as God turns his wrath from pagans to the people of God.  Verse 4 proclaims, “I will not relent from punishing Judah for three crimes, even four, because they have rejected the instruction of the Lord and have not kept His statutes.  The lies that their ancestors followed have led them astray.”

We are in the midst of watching so many people that has been led astray with lies.  We have told an entire generation since 1973 that abortion is a preferred right to choose instead of teaching them about the responsibilities of parental obligation.  It shouldn’t surprise us that a statue has been erected in America of two children adoring a satanic idol.

More now than ever, it’s time for us to call on our leaders to defund Planned Parenthood.  Just as God turned his wrath against those who disregarded the value of life with abortion and human trafficking, we’ve learned recently that in America, our taxpayers are now subsidizing the driving force behind both.  All people, including the unborn, are image of bearers of the Maker, and it’s time we plead their case for justice.
